Now-Next

Case · Hangar-Next

A native Android app, from first commit to Google Play in ten days.

Hangar-Next shows owners of a connected Cirrus aircraft what their aircraft is doing: fuel, oil, battery, hours, flights and maintenance, straight from their own Cirrus account. Native Android, on phone, foldable and tablet.

The problem

Modern Cirrus aircraft report their status to the manufacturer after every flight. Owners see it in Cirrus IQ, the manufacturer's own app — which exists for iPhone only. With an Android phone you were left with a web portal that was never designed for a small screen.

It is also our own problem: we fly a Cirrus ourselves, with an Android phone in our pocket.

What was built

The status of the aircraft at a glance: fuel per tank, oil temperature, battery voltage, hours and where it last reported. Every flight with its route on the map, the approach score and how it is built up, and the weather at landing, read out from the METAR. Inspections and technical publications. Statistics per pilot and per month, and badges for milestones.

On the home screen a widget with the aircraft, its fuel and the last flight. Notifications when the aircraft has reported, when the battery drops below its green band or when a maintenance item comes due. And a demo with a sample aircraft, so anyone — including Google's reviewers — can try the app without an account.

How

Kotlin and Jetpack Compose with Material 3 Expressive, with layouts that use the extra space on a foldable or tablet instead of stretching a phone screen. The widget is built with Glance; a background check keeps the data current without draining the battery.

The owner signs in on Cirrus' own page, and the data travels directly between phone and Cirrus. There is no server of ours in between, no analytics and no advertising. Releases, store texts and screenshots go to Google Play through its API, so a new version is a command rather than an afternoon of clicking.

Hangar-Next is an independent app by Now-Next. It is not made, endorsed or supported by Cirrus Aircraft.

What it demonstrates

That AI-driven development is not limited to web applications. A native mobile app — with its own platform rules, store review, signing keys and screen sizes — went from first commit to a public listing in ten days.

And that a small product is still a product: privacy policy, store listing, review notes, demo mode and support for three screen sizes are what decide whether an app gets in, not the screens alone.
